I can only speak from my own personal experience, but the teams I’ve worked on would always look for a github or portfolio for a candidate while preparing to interview them. If it was not listed on their resume, I would google for it. :-) Being able to see a sample of the candidate's code and see how they defined and approached a project helped us decided if we should bring them in for an in-person interview. We did not ask for github or a portfolio on the application because it wasn’t a requirement, and recruiters and HR did not typically know to ask for it. However, when the candidate did submit it, it gave them a competitive edge when the content was good.
